Jimmy Walsh Judge Samuel Sewall Samuel Sewall was the only person that publicly apologized for his roll in the trials. Every December after 1697 Samuel takes a whole day to pray for forgiveness for the sins he had done in the Salem trials. Governor Phips appointed Sewall to the Court of Order and Terminal on May 27, 1692. Sewall kept a diary everyday and his eateries provide important information about the Salem witch trials.In December 1696 Sewall wrote a proclamation for a day of fast penance and reparation by the government for the sins of the witchcraft trials. Judge Sewall appeared ill judging the witches during the time of the Salem witchcraft. His character was shown more at that time and afterward than any other time during his life. The memory of it haunted him for years, until in January 1697 he confessed in a "bill," which was read in front of the congregation of the Old South church in Boston by the minister. During the reading Sewall was standing in his place for the whole time.
